The QIO Program is involved in a variety of campaigns and initiatives that are closely tied to its clinical priorities. Many of these are fully or partly run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Following are some of the campaigns and initiatives in which the QIO Program’s Quality Innovation Network-Quality Improvement Organizations (QIN-QIOs) are involved:
Campaign for Meds Management (CMM): The CMM aims to promote the patient voice, experience and recommendations as a critical factor in helping providers and patients manage high-risk medications safely, efficiently and effectively. The campaign help QIN-QIOs in their work reducing Adverse Drug Events.
Everyone with Diabetes Counts (EDC): CMS developed EDC—a diabetes self-management education program offering evidence-based training—to improve health outcomes and quality of life among disparate and underserved Medicare beneficiaries. It is administered by the 14 QIN-QIOs as part of their Diabetes Care activities.
Home Health Quality Improvement (HHQI): This CMS initiative has been dedicated to improving the quality of care provided to American’s home health patients. HHQI provides home health practitioners and partners with a variety of free resources, including evidence-based tools, timely data reports and educational opportunities. QIN-QIOs serve as HHQI Network Coordinators and are part of the Stakeholder Work Committee.
Million Hearts®: Established in 2012 by the Department of Health and Human Services, and co-led by CMS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this national initiative aims to prevent a million cardiovascular events within five years. The Million Hearts 2022 framework’s priorities include keeping people healthy, optimizing care and improving outcomes for priority populations. In alignment with this initiative, QIN-QIOs focus on improving cardiac risk reduction and improving blood pressure measurement and control as part of their Cardiac Health activities.
National Nursing Home Quality Improvement Campaign (NNHQI): Launched in 2006 as the Advancing Excellence Campaign with the goal of making nursing homes better places to live, work and visit, the campaign evolved into a national movement focused on quality improvement. In August 2016, CMS took over the Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes Campaign and renamed it NNHQI. QIN-QIOs continue to sustain the campaign’s mission as part of their Nursing Home Care activities.
